Tankers as tall as the Empire State building, $100 million cargoes, pirates running amok on the high seas, a Greek shipping tycoon known to all as “the Captain” — and an offer to take on Next Generation interns. What’s not to like?

Touring Tsakos Shipping Global Operations Center

Our latest Master Class in the world headquarters of Tsakos Shipping began with a tour and briefing by executives in their 24/7 operations center — which included a fascinating discussion of how this shipping company tracks over 50 vessels each carrying more than $100 million in cargo around the world at any given time, along with the logistical, financial, international and even security problems such an enterprise encounters — including the phenomenon of modern pirates and their impact on the industry, the measures their company is taking to combat this growing problem — and even the inside story of how one of their own ships was attacked by pirates recently, and what the captain did to successfully repel the pirates.

From the operational heart of this far-flung floating empire, the class to the top floor and sat down in the company’s paneled boardroom with the CEO of the NYSE-listed Tsakos Energy Navigation. Nikos Tsakos, the young and dynamic son of the modern company’s founder, Capt. Panagiotis Tsakos, known to all as “the Captain,” took the Athens Fellows through the intriguing story of the family company, his own career path, his role in taking his company public — the first IPO by a Greek shipping company — and his own overview of (and very modern take on) the Greek shipping industry and its dominant place in Greece’s economy and its crucial and strategic role in the global economy.
